Unfortunately, you need silicone oil to proper make kinetic sand. And we just don’t have a way to combine silicone oil with sand easily at home. So, while I’m all for making your own play dough and slime, stay away from DIY kinetic sand. Consider adding color, scent, or glitter to the sand. You can buy colored sand, or plain sand. Colored sand will be more expensive, but plain sand will give you a clean slate to work with. If you hand plain sand and want a range of colors, you'll need to separate out the sand evenly into smaller containers and then add the different colors separately. Here are a few ways you can spruce up plain sand: [1] X Research source [2] X Research source What is exactly is kinetic sand made out of? You might be surprised to know that kinetic sand is actually 98 percent regular sand. However, the other two percent is what gives it its unique qualities. To make kinetic sand, regular sand is coated in polydimethylsiloxane and silica. This creates the texture of kinetic sand and actually turns it into a non-Newtonian fluid, which means it can flow like a liquid when it is under pressure but just fall apart when the pressure is removed. Try squeezing the kinetic sand and see what happens when you apply more pressure versus when you stop applying pressure.

Ensure that your sand is bone dry before continuing with this step. If your sand is damp, you will need to bake it first to remove the excess water. Think about storage as well when getting kinetic sand, as it can tend to dry out and become crumbly when it is left out for too long. Ideally, you want to keep the sand in resealable bags or in an air-tight container. This way, it will stay moist and malleable for years. Plus, having a proper storage container also makes cleanup a lot easier.
